Your best bet to improve the sound quality and volume, is actually to buy a better set of headphones with it.

Sony do some that in their Fontopia range that give excellent sound quality, bass, volume, etc. And reduce external noise by having a closed inner ear type earphone structure.

However, I've heard recently that the build quality of the Sony ones is a bit poor, and the wire rubber encasing starts to wear out and fall to pieces after you've owned them for about 6 to 9 months.

But if you look for similar style closed earphone structure ones from other brands on www.amazon.co.uk (for example) you'll soon find something good.
