Because the original name "the x-y position indicator for display" did not work for people. The early "mouse" was backwards, with the buttons at one end at the cable coming off the other, and the button "stuck up" like ears. So it looked more "mouse" like then the design normally used today.

I have wondered that for a long time, too. Maybe because it sorta looks like one, with its mouse-shaped body and its massive 'tail'.
