how to convert lps to cdrs?

I would like to convert some of my long playing record collection into compact discs. I would like to use my pioneer turn table to connect to my computers line-in port. Do I need a preamp for the turntable or will the computers line-in port pick up the signal? I plan on using Nero Ultra's "Wave editor 2" software to clean up the tracks. Thanks
