Clearly i remember, picking on the boy, seemed a harmless little....its meaning, well, bullying springs to mind, what happens when someone is tipped over the edge, given the nature of pearl jams output, the fact that they seem to be outsiders, its probably about a loner/misfit/someone different from the in crowd who kinda flips....Jeremy spoke in class today....with his pistol not his mouth. personally, I love PJ, the debut album was a masterpiece, still gets played v.loud v.regularly by moi, once heard that the song was based on a real life incident in a US school, given the number of aholes with guns in the US it could be true but more than likely an urban myth, although dont be surprised if some ahole takes it literally and does a Jeremy

I alway thought the song was about the weird quiet kid who gets bullied at school, until one day he lashes out in a rage:
"Clearly I remember picking on the boy.
Seemed a harmless little ****...but we unleashed a lion.
Gnashed his teeth and bit the recess lady's breast.
How could I forget?"
...and the singer realises in later years that Jeremy was being abused/neglected at home as well, and now feels guilty for picking on him at school:
"And he hit me with a surprise left.
My jaw left hurting, dropped wide open.
Just like the day...like the day I heard
Daddy didn't give affection and the boy was something mommy wouldn't wear."
According to Wikipedia:
"One of Pearl Jam's first singles, the song was inspired by a newspaper article about a 16-year-old boy named Jeremy Wade Delle from Richardson, Texas who shot himself in front of his English class in Richardson High School on the morning of January 8, 1991."

I thought it was about a boy who went in to school, and killed classmates & teachers. I think Jeremy is the name of the first boy to do this

what i took from the song is this kid, jeremy, took the lives of several of his class"mates" in a gun spree after enduring years of bullying at the hands of others in the school...eventually,( and having neglectful parents who he may have also killed) jeremy snaps in his classroom. the meaning is simple...even seemingly long suffering victims of bullying can turn...it's just a matter of time. cool video too, coincedently.

About a child with no friends and family who care or have love for him. Then he showed all the billies how hurtful they were by committing suicide in front of them -- realising him from his torment and in return passing the torment on to the tormentors with the vision of his death !!!
