This practise has been proven to cause accidents and deaths. Why do we not look on people who do this in the same way that we look at those who drive drunk? Both are proven to be dangerous yet people phone and drive all the time, even with children in the car. Opinions?

Cellphones are blamed for accidents because they're an easy target. But I see people doing far worse: reading the newspaper when driving. turning around to yell at kids in the back seat. Putting on makeup! Eating breakfast. All while they're fooling with the radio and chatting to the front passenger.

We do have a punishment already for someone who causes trouble when they're not looking when they're going: Inattentive Driving. In most states this is a serious traffic offense.

The real question is why aren't existing laws about inattentive driving, staying in lane, observing a safe speed, and not tailgating being enforced. After all, it's the swerving or sudden stops that cause an impact, not the simple act of holding a phone up.

I agree but just as bad as eating a sandwich or anything else while driving, putting on lipstick, changing the radio station, reading the newspaper or a map whiel driving. We are all guilty of distractions while driving. some are just more skilled than others at driving and multitasking. The difference is that your judgement is impaired when driving drunk or while tired. The other things are distrations that you can instantly stop doing. It is the law to have both hands on the wheel so reaching for money for a toll both is technically illegal as well.
But I do agree that driving takes our full attention escpecialy now with others who are on their phones. You just pray that two cell phone users dont cross each others path.

People never learn till they are in deep trouble, it is forbidden to drive and talk in all the countries, but still you see a lot still using the mobile, and the problem is they do not change this habit till the damage is done.
