Yes, it hurts. However, it isn't going to kill you. It only lasts for a few seconds.
I have had mine done twice. The first time I had to take it out and let it close, so got it done again. If it was too bad, I wouldn't have done it again.

I have heard that the metal ball can chip your teeth. I don't know. Mine never got chipped so I can't say it definitely will or won't. You can't pierce with plastic nor can you change into plastic for several weeks, so you will have to leave the metal in place for the time being.Just don't clank it around your mouth and you will be fine. I can't see you breaking your teeth unless you are moving it around your mouth a whole lot.

Good Luck!!

As with any piercing or tattoo, each person will react differently to the experience. Each person will heal a little differently, and each person will describe it a little differently. It's all about you.

That being said, here's my experience...

I've had my tongue pierced for 3 weeks now...just before the piercing, Wit (my piercer) had my rinse my mouth out with some super strong mouthwash and it did a pretty nice job of numbing me up. At the instant the needle went through, I didn't feel much of anything...maybe a little pinch...but no real pain. My tongue was swollen for about 3 or 4 days, and I was a little lispy for the first 2.

Now...in no way do I suggest you do the things I did after my piercing...but I have to add this to lighten the worry of infection for some. I was on vacation partying with some friends when I got this done...so contrary to ALL aftercare instructions, I was drinking, smoking, and eating spicy foods, the very night I got it pierced. I have had no abnormal bleeding, swelling, pain, or infection...no gauging (expanding of the whole for those that don't know) and no migrating.

So these people with the horror stories, either did some seriously stupid stuff, their bodies just couldn't handle it, or they went to the wrong place to have it done.

On the subject of plastic vs. metal. I'm told the acrylic ones are the best for protecting your teeth...don't know why, and I'm not saying it's true...it's just what I've heard.

I just said it somewhere else too. Do not believe all those ignorant people's horror stories if you hear them.
I won't hurt when you get it done, they are first of all professionals and it's done very fast and safe and easy. It won't bleed at all.
And it swells up a while later which will make it hard for you to eat and talk but this only lasts a day and it's not so bad, it was fun for me actually cuz me and my bf were writing to each other on little papers, it was like a game, I laughed my butt off, it was funny:)
And noooooo you won't chip your teeth cuz the ring does not touch your teeth at all, you have to actually make your ring touch your teeth on purpose to be able to do that.
I'm sure you will have several different rings once you get it done, I got the regular metal one from the piercing store and then a few weeks later I bought a few other rings and they are colorful plastic, one has a smiley face on it and one has some writings on it, it's kinda flat. One has a pretty daisy on it. Have fun with your new piercing!

well i had mine done years ago and it doesnt hurt when you actually have it done but my god,,it hurts like hell when the anathetic spray and gel wear off,,it may bleed a lot, mine did,,all over my teeth, not pretty so dont smile,,it may swell so do leave in the long bar they give you till it goes down,,,,do not mess with it,,,the tongue is a muscle and any unecessary twiddling will cause it to scar, swell again and could increse the chance of infection,,food doesnt get stuck but for a few weeks at least try to keep foods soft as chewing moves the bar and hurts,,drink plenty of water to keep the area clean,,DO NOT take out,,the hole will disappear under the swelling and you will not get it back in,,,,,i can promise you that,,i did it and couldnt find the hole underneath,,i had to cut it slightly and push it through so believe me.it can chip your teeth but you will get used to it and its only when you take it out that something feels odd,,you may or may not have a lisp for a few weeks but, personally i found that rather funny,,after that,,,,,nothing,,play away and change the bolt for anyone you want,,keep the original though,,it may come in handy if you swallow the ball because they can unscrew themselves and you will need an instant replacement.......

Mine is pierced and yes it hurt; not the needle but the claps used to hold your tongue out made my throat sore for a few days. Wear a plastic ball I did bite down on mine one night and knocked out a filling which was expensive to replace. Also the dentist told my that the enamel on the back of my teeth was damaged and that is irreparable! Good luck and make sure you really want it. (I love mine)

have you ever bitten your tongue? hurts huh? well, a piercing goes all the way thru your tongue. do you think that will hurt? yeah, i thought so.
my stepdaughter has a plastic ball and a huge v between her 2 front teeth. real pretty..... not really.
my other stepdaughter ended up in the hospital because the person who tried to pierce her tongue went thru a vein and she bled for 2 days before she said anything. it got infected. she is anemic. she almost died - from a piercing. sad, but true. the doctor said he personally had never seen anything like it, but it does happen.

Don't do it - it's bloody dangerous.

Fair enough - you can make a decision to do whatever you want to your own body, but I'm sure you're aware of piercings going septic in other places. Imagine having your tongue going septic (There's a much higher chance of this due to the obscene amount of germs and bacteria naturally present in your mouth). Not only would it weep septic puss into your mouth, but there's a very real chance that your tongue could swell and choke you - it doesn't even need to swell that much to block your airway. Get somewhere else done instead, it takes a fair while for a bubbling puss-bag to sevelop into septicaemia, so there's a good chance of gettin help before something serious happens. You don't have that option with your tongue.

Ive had mine done for a long time i do love having it but it does have massive downsides where the ball is underneath it has rub away the gum on my front two bottom teeth this is really bad you can see where my teeth are attached to my jaw. yes this is a plastic ball. so even though there are good points and bad points think very carefully about this decision .

Getting your tongue pierced is quick and simple. Just make sure before you go that right afterwards you suck on ICE, it will keep it from swelling. Stay with metal balls because the plastic ones are cheap and always come off. Good Luck!

I have not had my tongue pierced because I am a wuss, but a lot of my friends do and not a single one of them has had any trouble other than some pain in the first few days which left them eating a lot of ice cream. And frankly none of them, complained to hard about that!

If you're going to a reputable place they should be able to give you more advice.
