In 1967 we went by train across the USA, from PA to CA, where we were going to visit relatives. We traveled by train, because we wanted to see the country. It was more expensive than if we had flown at that time. That's when trains were trains. We went on Union Pacific.
We had our own compartment and bath. There was a dining car with real table linens, silver coffee pots, maitre'd, waiters; just like a restaurant. There was a dome dining car, a dome observation car, where you could take movies out the windows. We took movies across the whole country. We crossed the Great Salt Lake. There was a bar, card room, and living room car. The living room had sofas and chairs facing out the windows so you could sight-see, also; a desk with stationery. The windows even had drapes on them. The only stop we made was in Ogden, Utah.
The conductor would tell us when something exciting was coming up so we all could look at it. The porters were very nice, also. The trip was 2 1/2 days, and I thought ahead of time that is would be boring. It was just the opposite. The trip is very vivid in our minds until this day.
We really enjoy nice trains, and think it would be very interesting to travel in Europe this way. The Orient Express has always fascinated me, and the other train trips; like a Mystery Trip.
You meet alot of nice people, too.

sure, yet no longer provided that i grow to be a teenager, only began working in CBD & had a flat via certainly one of Aucklands greater suburban railway stations. Commuted each and daily to and from artwork for enormously much 2 years. Visited Sydney in 2004, went on the subway there, enjoyed the service, speedy & contemporary. I relatively have a lingering activity, i might go with to do a classic rail holiday someplace sometime. great theory, Debby

yes, but unfortunately where I live there are no oportunites to travel by train. only stupid novelty train rides that do loops without ever really going anywhere. If there were more commuter trains in america (southeast) we wouldn't be up such a s**** creek with oil.

In general, no. Train is my least favorite mode of transportation, because it sways you from side to side...especially subway trains. However, if the train ride is less than 1 hour I can handle it.

Yes, read a book, watch the landscape. I ride a commuter train to work every day, and recommend it.

Yes, bigger seats, more room to walk around, less security to go through and if you miss your train you can catch the next one without having to change your ticket
