It's not about the shape of the headphones, it's about the sound. It seems (and i may be wrong here) that even if it's a song I haven't heard, it just sounds a bit odd if i'm listening to the left speaker from theright and visa versa

I would say that it is because music these days is very carefully and (almost) scientifically digitally modified into stereo by splitting the individual sounds between the two outputs (in your case headphones). This is probably done after much research into what will produce the best sound quality/effect... therefore putting them the wrong way round will make it sound "wrong"... this is of course only true of true stereo sound... if it were just the same sound coming from both headphones then there really isn't any way to tell...

they're designed to fit a certain way. if it's backwards it won't work right
