As the court system become more interactive, many courts have websites that allow you to look up case numbers by the names of the parties involved. In most federal courts, you can even sign up for a PACER account that will allow you much broad search capabilities and even download file documents.

You need to know the correct court where the was case handled. Call the clerk's office or visit the court's website and they can give you more specific instructions on how to conduct the search.
