A chain is broken into three pieces of equal lengths containing 3 links each. It is taken to a blacksmith to join into a single continuous one. How many links are to to be opened to make it ?

join together ? How many links total ? To make it one length the blacksmith would add two links 1 joining a to b and another joining b to c total links 11

Eleven....The blacksmith has to add two links in order to repair the chain.
Or perhaps the blacksmith opened two joints and made one chain, with nine links.

It's actually four pieces of chain of three links.

Instead of opening up one link on each chain (four cuts) you sacrifice one set of three and use those link to make your chain of 12 links.
