I say a pentium 4 or AMD Athlon with at least 2.8Ghz speed, at least 1Gb RAM, a video card suitable for gaming with at least 128Mb memory (like ATI Radeon X600 or Geforce 7300), a HD 40Gb or above (preferably 5400RPM or higher). You can get one with those specs for $1000 (or less) at www.tigerdirect.ca

19 inch widescreen, at least 1-2gb ram, hd doesn't matter all that much, lets say over 60gb, dual 256 mb gpus, wifi, and a good warranty. but for this amount of money, you could buy a very decent gaming computer for you and all your friends. so we need more information from you to properly answer.

if it's for gaming go for a desktop, failing that CPU specs are the most NB then RAM, esp if your RAM is shared video memory.

Go for a laptop that has independent video memory

Check Dell. They have good ones.
