Student visas do not easily convert to perm applications to live in the US. Most of my information is pre-9-11 so some of this may have change. The US Gov imigration web sites are a nightmare and very confusing. Canada is an ally of the US so you can easily get a visitation visa. A student visa is again not didficult to obtain. As for work you just work under the table, BUT a key point of both visas is proof of where you are going to stay and how you are going to support yourself. Getting caught working can get you expelled from the country in a hurry, though obviously we don't enforce such laws. The tens of millions illegals in the US, at least half a million of those being Canadian is proof of that. You can find entire Candian comunities in Florida. Why Florida I don't know. Maybe because it is so different from Canada. Anyway the basic route to US citizenship is education. The higher your education or if you can provide a desired skill then the better your chances to imigrate to the US legally. Having a sponsor helps a great deal. If you go to a church, many of those are happy to help sponsor a new member and some have experience cutting through the paperwork. An imigration attorney is again a huge help. Expensive but having money helps your chances to imigrate as well. Finding an American spouse is a frustratingly slow but almost certain way to become a US citizen but you have to be married until you are naturalized and they do some extensive checking up some times. So marriage mills are to be avoided. If you are unattached finding an American woman who you can marry is easy. Women of all shapes sizes and interests. There is certainly one out there for you. You can help her get Candian citizenship at the same time thus enabling both of you to travel freely between the two countries and giving you the option to live in either without additional paperwork.

Visitation visas from Canada are easy to obtain. Short term one month or so even easier. Don't overstay your visa though. That creates major legal headaches.

Again double check everything I've spoken of. It has been over five years since I reasearched all of this and much may have changed.
