They were most likely being facetious or attempting to be "mean and menacing". I don't think it has any real meaning, although interestingly a "joint" (ir jointed track) is a track in which the rails are laid in lengths of around 20 m and bolted to each other end-to-end by means of "fishplates" (UK) or "joint bars" (US). Hmm...Images of a "damsel in distress" tied to the rail track (as in those old old movies) comes to mind!!
