At the recommendation of a friend, I contacted her former boss who works at a company that I very much want to join. We spoke on the phone for a little while, and then she said that "If X recommended you, I'll put you at the top of the list for any new opening."

But she said she didn't expect anything until the fall (this was June). So she told me to check in with her once a month just in case (she emphasized "once"), which I've done, but I've never gotten a response.

I left a voicemail and email in July, since I wasn't sure how she wanted me to contact her, but no response. I just emailed this time (Aug.), but still no reply. I was just hoping for an acknowledgment. Is she getting my messages? Does she remember me?!

Since this is the second time in a row this has happened and this person is a senior manager, maybe she's just busy or there's no news. I don't want to pester her or my friend for info, but it's confusing. Or should I not expect to hear anything till fall? Any thoughts?

Yes, this person has my resume. The person who recommended me to her was also at a senior level, and she also knows some of my work because my old employer had been a client of this company, so it's not like I'm just some random guy. Hopefully! :)

As for going to HR -- HR is almost always clueless and useless. Don't get me started. Plus this person I'm in contact(!) with is in charge of staffing anyway.

Once a month, nothing til fall.

It's not fall yet, and fall isn't over until November. So, contact her by email or voice mail, one time each month. Follow the directions, don't ignore her, or you will never get the job.

Same kind of thing happened to me, I waited 8 months, but the other person finally quit, making the opening I was waiting on. The new boss called me before the workday was over when the previous person quit. Hang in there.

its usually a sign that there's no update, bear with them and chase once you are into fall. Maybe put in an official application letter through the post to the companies HR department to back up your interest.

Have you provided her your resume and personal references in writing?
About the 1st of Sept, put together a cover letter, your resume, with complete addresses, and personal references (be sure and include the friend who recommended you).

Summarize your continued interest in the corporation and your interest in discussing opportunities....
Also, don't expect this person "to get you a job". call their human resources dept and inquire also.

It sounds like she was trying to be nice to you, but really has no intention of hiring you. Hopefully I'm wrong about this though.
