Find one of the types of files (wav, mp3, etc) you want to open with WMP
Right-click on the file
Select "Open with"
Find Windows Media Player in the Program listings and select it
Check the "Allows use the select program to open this kind of file" box at the bottom
Now that type of file with open with WMP
Repeat for other file types if needed

I have the same problem. I just open Windows Media player and on the upper right hand side there is a little arrow beside the minimize button. If you click on it, go to file and add to library you can click on "by searching computer". The computer will then find all media files on the computer (a pain in the butt the first time because you have all those tiny sound files it pulls in also). After that you will be able to change the search criteria so that it won't pull them in again. That is the only way I have been able to play out of Windows Media Player.

Choose your Windows Media Player as a Default Player for Music files

For that you must have to go to Tools > Folder Options

Select the File Types tab Select the Extension click on change select Windows Media Player from the list and click OK

Close your settings and play the file
