They formed up in the time of Knights Templar in Europe and were quickly ousted. This type of cult was losing acceptability but have always surfaced from time to time since.
Today it is the independent God cults and the Satanists in America.

sorry mate i have been doing research and it seems to me you have been reading a dan brown book ;) unfortunatley there is too many conspiratists giving you the wrong answers and that really annoys me, the same question was asked about a week ago and the ammount of incorrect answers was appauling, people just answer without doing research on the subject. anyway as i was saying the illuminati was split up during the middle ages, during the plague so many of it members were killed they decided too discontinue it, however the freemasons were started by an illuminati member to gain personal power of a whole society. So if you think of it logicall the freemasons are the neo-illuminati.

Don't let this stuff bother you because you absolutely cannot do anything about it. You can't prove they exist, you can't prove they don't. You can't know their plans. You can't thwart their plans. You can't save the world by hunting them down and throwing them in jail.
Conspiracy theories make for interesting conversation and interesting reading but you shouldn't lose sight of the fact that it's all just speculation. Some of it is true and some of it is not, just like the evening news, just like any book you pick up.
Repeat 10 times:
EVERYTHING I read may or may not be true.
But remember, just because you're not paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

The designation illuminati was in use from the 14th century by the Brethren of the Free Spirit. In the 15th century the name was adopted by other enthusiasts who claimed that the illuminating light came, not by communication from an authoritative or secret source, but from within, as the result of exalted consciousness, or "enlightenment".
