All you need for a paypal account is a valid credit card or a chequing account in a bank. Paypal will do the currency exchange for you and the majority of companies use Paypal..As for the second part of your question, check out my previous answer

PayPal is a subsidary of ebay and works as your online wallet. They are not the home typing sort of a company. Actually PayPal account means you have to deposit your credit card details/ funds to pay pal and then you can buy different items online referring your pay pal account instead of giving your credit card details on every site. the site is paid through paypal who in turn debit the funds from your account. This method is quite secure and is getting popularity. You can also transfer funds from one account to another using your PayPal account.

For home typists kind of work, you will have to look for some companies other than PayPal like http://www.typingfactory.com http://www.anytype.com etc. You can try google to look for a list of such companies.

Most likely those home typist job are scams. Don't sign up for them.

I haven't researched the work at home job market in London but in the US most of the work at home jobs are technical or phone jobs. Go to http://jobsearch.monster.co.uk and click on telecommute at first glance there are a handful of bookkeeping work at home jobs there but the majority are screaming scam : (
