Nice Friend: Not a reason, a cause! The Austrians only took that event as an excuse to attack Serbia.

Happy: Žao mi je zbog tvog oca, iskreno! Moj otac je izbegao da ode u rat i ja sam ponosan na njega, kao i na gomilu Beograđana koji su uradili isto!

Modern Serbia is a landlocked country on the Balkan pennisula of Europe. It was once the dominant partner in the nation of Yugoslavia but with the recent separation of Montenagro, it is now a republic all on its own.

Serbs are a Slavic people, like Russians, Ukrainians and Poles are. There language is a distinct one from these other peoples however that is shared only with their neighbours the Croatians who's primary distinguishment between themselves and the Serbs is the adherance to Roman Catholicism while Serbia is orthodox.

Perhaps the dominant theme in Serbian history would be in the place they were put at the crossroads between Christian Europe and Muslim Asia. For centuries their nation was under the thumb of the Turkish Empire and the scene of more than one horrific confrontation between the Germanic Powers of Central Europe and the Turks. This put them in the very inenviable position of being outsiders in their own state and very much removed from peoples they shared more of their culture with. This left quite an impact that we do this day still would have a hard time understanding in North America.

When the western Turkish Empire began falling apart in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, among the many new states to emerge was that of Serbia which engaged in a very agressive growth program, taking land from their neighbours and expanding their state to include other non-Serbian peoples. This eventually brought them into confrontation with the powerfull Habsburg (Austrian) Empire which escalated into the First World War. When that confrontation ended and Austria was broken up into several countries (Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, and some territory for Romainia) Serbia was rolled into the "Kingdom of Croats, Serbs and Slovenes" which later became Yugoslavia.

When the Nazis invaded some years later, the fragile and weak ethnic peace that existed in this structure was destroyed, New ethnic puppet states were formed and some of the worst brutalities of the war occurred in the Balkans. As the ware progressed though, the Partisans, led by a man we know as Tito began to congeal all these ethnic groups into a single force which expelled the Nazis and restored Yugoslavia. Eventually this new nation fell into the orbit of the Soviet Union and then began to fight for a new breed of communist socialism in the world. It again made the area a pariah for all. In a nutshell that is what brought us to the civil war we all watched on TV ten years ago....

Serbia is located in the Balkans (a historically and geographically distinct region of southeastern Europe) and in the Pannonian Plain (a region of central Europe). It shares borders with Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, the Republic of Macedonia, and Romania. Serbia is landlocked, although the Danube River provides shipping access to inland Europe and the Black Sea

Srbija napala Bosnu. Boze sacuvaj. Eto svakakvih si odgovora dobio, ukljucujuci i muslimansku propagandu. Ispade da u BiH nije bio gradjanski rat, kao sto jeste. I da nije bilo Srba u BiH, nego su dosli kada je poceo rat, pa su izvrsili agresiju, sve prelazeci preko Drine. Da ne povjerujes.

I can tell you something about the people of that country: They have enough national pride not to hide behind the finger and wait for others to step on their honor. This of course coasted them a lot of pain in the last century, but to keep your national conscience alive you need to suffer.
