Dirt and gunk in nails is a natural thing thats always going to come back. The fingernails and toe nails are the dirtiest parts of the human body because they gather bacteria and germs from Everything you do and it doesnt go away until you clean them out- and even then some still resides. One of the best things you can use is called an orange wood stick. It is a wooden stick that has both sides flattened and was designed for the nail (even though it has many other uses). Orange weed sticks can be purchased pretty much at any sort of beauty store. You use them to sweep out all the gunk from your nails and because they are inexpensive, throw the stick away when you are done to make sure that the bacteria left on the stick is gone so that infection cant spread. You should then probably dip your nails in a 70% alcohol like ones that come in the brown botteles from the store. You can also use hand sanitizer, your choice; just something to kill all the germs and bacteria. The sticks can also be used to push your cuticle (the skin that grows out over your nail where the nail leaves the finger) to make your nails grow faster. It may be somewheat time consuming but if you clean your nails and push up your cuticle once every week or just when they get really dirty; your nails will stay healthier and grow faster.

'The dirty stuff' gets in your nails:
a) if you live/work in a dirty/dusty place;
b) when you cut you'r nails, their edge becomes all rumpy, so dirt catches on that.
The solution is, for:
a) tough - you just have to wash your hands more frequently, and try to clean your living/working space as much as possible;
b) (also counts for a) a manicure would help - and you can do it yourself, just buy a manicure set. A nail brush is a good advice, too.

keep them cut very short and use a nail brush or a nail file to scrape the grunge out from under them.

if regular washing and scraping isn't enough..........

soak hands in polident and hot water. scrub under nails with an old toothbrush.
my husband is a mechanic and this get everything off his hands and nails.

polident is a lot cheaper than those hand cleaners and works better, too.

Your question of route shouldn't were that, because you of route recognize the answer. The "black stuff" is fungus, and also you ward off it by technique of being careful what you're touching. yet i imagine preserving your nails short is a thanks to maintain away from it.
