Buy a bigger harddrive and what i find useful, by a secondary hard drive or flash memory that you can just connect to USB. Constantly DEFRAG i can't stress that enough and if you have any DVD files check em cause I had the same problem and i noticed that i had about 120GB of DVDs

Right click on the recycle bin, properties and then set the slider down to about 1% to reduce the amount of space it uses.
Click on Tools, Internet Options, Settings in Internet Explorer, move the slider to reduce the amount of space for the Temporary Internet Files.
Search for and delete any files that match *.tmp, *.bak, *.lst, *.prt
Possibly also *.zip but check what they are first.
Hover you mouse over each folder in turn on the C: drive to view the space used and check out the contenets of those that use the largest proportions.
Remove all unused software.
All of these are stop-gap measures and you probably need to buy and install a second disk. Get one that is at least twice as big as your current drive and move all of your data/games/music/films onto it.
Also create a small partition on your new disk and move your swap file into there, this will also help speed up you overall performance.

While defrag won't actually help you increase your disk space, you could save any files that you actually do not use or need on CDs/DVDs and do the defrag ('cause file fragments won't be scattered all over the harddisk then). But the first thing to pop in my mind is ... buy a new harddisk. They aren't that expensive ...try to buy one with at least 8 megabytes cache.

Empty your recycle bin!
A file's space is not freed up until it has been emptied from the recycle bin.
