Depends on which tank it was that was replaced, but, even if it was the hot water cylinder, I still think you were overcharged. I have been plumbing for over 35 years and I would be more than happy to get that sort of money. Mind you, if I took 9 hours, I think I would give up and take up road sweeping!!

I'm a plumber and Yes you have been ripped off big time. as a plumber i can get a decent water tank for about £60 which would be adequit for a 4 bed house. Also most plumbers I know and work with charge between £150 and £225 per day (London Rates) Did you get this plumbers Number (Gorgi) or was he a chancer? Personally I would of done the job for £300 including materials as long as it was stright forward. Next time get at least 3 estimates

I think the plumber has taken the piss out of you but you`ve paid it and obviously accepted the quote! I would recommend shopping about next time you ever need plumbers or any tradesmen for that matter and compare quotes, you don`t want to be paying cheap rates either or there could b a risk of dodgy job being done! Also are you happy with work that has been carried out? I would`nt beat yourself up over it!

Probably not.
Is it a hot water tank or a cold One?
Hot water tanks are made of copper and expensive.
also the guys labour will be about £50 an hour
Then VAT on top @ 17.5%
Next time you need work doing it is always advisable to ask for 3 quotes before anyone starts work, this will give you a better idea of prices.

The plumbing to the water tank should take half an hour at the most for disconnecting and the same for reconnecting. Double that in case there were problems - 2 hours max for labour and it is not skilled labour - a trained monkey could do it, and often does !

Then it would be how long it took him to get the tank in and out.

I reckon he was asleep !

you should always always get at least two or three quotes. If you just ring up a plumber and ask him to carry out a job you might as well just give him you cheque book.

I know my brother in law is a plumber ( a good one ) he told me about a job recently a copper cylinder change and that the cylinder cost him over £350 just to buy he charged the client just under £500 and they had a fit until he showed them the recite

Well, lets assume a water tank costs £250.

Including VAT, thats about £60 per hour, which is a f*ckin rip!!!

£30 an hour would be about average.

Unless you can tell us how much the water tank cost, me thinks you might have been 'done', my naive friend!

No, watertanks are expensive in their own right, and 9 hours labour? Would you get out of bed for less than the combined value? You're paying for a skilled labourer remember.
