Playing little league football in St. Louis MO. when I was 9 years old.
Mosouri has weight divisions. At 9 years old if you weighed more than 65 lbs. you played in the nine heavy league. 65 lbs. and under you played in the nine light league.
I was a nine light weighing in at 65 lbs.
Jimmy Dykes was the star of our team and without him I'm sure we would have been more on a equal footing with the rest of the teams. However, the one thing that set us apart from the others was our coaching staff. B.W. Dykes was our head coach. My Father Joe Waggoner was the head defensive coach.
Here's the kicker! My father had High School coaching experience at 2 major schools in Arkansas. His last tenure was as a head coach at Cathloic High in Little Rock Arkansas.
It is noteworthy to me too mention that B.W. Dykes and Joe Waggoner were now with South Westeren Bell and this is how I came to know this incredible athalete, Jimmy Dykes!
At 9 yrs. old Jimmy threw the football 40 yards winning the the kick, pass and punt award. He could run too! Run, run, run!
As I understand it, when Jimmy was attending high school in Kansas he was 2nd in the state at the100 yrd dash and 1st in the 220.
All kidding aside, not bad for a white boy!
Anyway's, our team was called the Kirkwood Razorbacks and the U of A provided genuine razorback decals for our helments.
We wore em proud winning all eleven division games and the 12th being the MO. State Championship!
We were beating teams 56-0. I recall beating the Normandy Dragons 63-0.
Some coaches in Memphis heard about us and put together a team of 9 yr. old with no weight limit that were all star players in the memphis area.
They called themselfs the Memphis all-stars.
This was our toughest challenge!
However, we prevailed in our winning effort 21-6.
Our record for the year was 13-0!
Jimmy Dykes later went on to play basketball at the U of A under Eddie Sutton. He was a grduate coach with Eddie Sutton. He has been with E.S.P.N. as a color analyst. Also worked K.A.T.V. , Raycom and Jefferson Pilot calling Razorback Basketball games.

I would have to say my favorite child hood memory is when my family use to actually be and act like one. Going out and doing things as a family. Having big family BBQs and such. Not like now were everyone just talks about each other...fuss with each other and doesn't do anything together.
