Its really ironic that cockroaches, theoretically at least, will survive a nuclear holocaust due their primitive development. First, they are insects, and thus have no internal skeletons, but an exoskeleton made up of chitin, that material we see on their bodies. Secondly, their nervous systems are so primitive that only their most basic instincts are controlled by a nerve bundle or ganglia which passes for a brain. They are, so to speak, brainless. So, they may be damaged, or harmed, but these creatures dont know it. All they know is that they have to hide.Seen a cockroach walking around with a few missing legs?Their primitiveness makes them the most likely survivor.

I think part of it has to do with their extremely tough physical makeup and part of it has to do with their being in protected places such as in pipes and underground. Rats will also survive for similar reasons.
