Try complaining to the Local Government Ombudsman. Their site is at http://www.lgo.org.uk/

I think you will find that under the new government decent homes standard the council has to update all of it's properties by the year 2010. This means all general repairs to the outside and inside of the properties. It also includes new kitchens and bathrooms if theya re needed. and by the sound of it she needs it! Below is a link to the government web site for the decent homes standard. I would suggest contacting the council and asking them what they are doing to work towards this standard, what the timescales are etc... If they still refuse to talk to you go to your local MP and CAB office. The council is your girlfriends landlord and is responsible for a lot more than they freely admit to!

My friend used to live in a council house and the kitchen was i a state of disrepair (broken cupboards, sink practically useless). I don't know what borough you're in, but here in Lewes District she went to the offices, filled in a request form and workmen were round within a week or so to repair.

Also, check if you have a shop in your area (ours is a Christian Outreach thing) where you can put notices up asking for free stuff - it does work, amazingly.

Alternatively, try your local MP - www.writetothem.com will freely send email or a fax to your MP. Use fax, it tends to get more attention.

Depend on yourself and be pro active, why hang about expecting some one else to do everything for you? She is lucky to have somewhere to live. I am a so called professional and can only find a room in someone else's house to live in. Because I am single and male there is no point on being on a council waiting list. So get your a*se in gear, go out and become a free thinking, self dependent adult and stop hanging about waiting for council hand outs.
