Congestion of the nasal passages occur when there is a buildup of mucus in the passages due to infection by a virus. Its a way of the body to fight infection and mucus discharged from the nasal passages usually contain large amounts of dead viruses attacked by the body's natural defenses. Its also not limited to the nasal passages but in severe colds the sinuses, or the spaces between bones on our forehead, cheeks and above the eyes become clogged due to mucus build up.Thus we get the headaches, sore throat, earaches and generally dizzy feeling when we get a severe cold.
