There's regular bus service that costs about 10 pounds (16 return). There are no direct trains.
Or you could try to hitch. What do you consider "a fortune"?

National Express Bus takes 1hour 30 minutes and costs about £9 (depends on tine of day)
You can check departure times/costs and book online at http://www.london-luton.co.uk/en/national_express.asp
This is probably as quick as by train -- and certaily much cheaper) as there is no direct train link. To travel by train you'd have to get the main line train from teh airport to London, change at Farringdon to the Tube (short easy interchange, but means crossing a bridge to Circle line east) to Liverpool Street then catch the Stansted Express

Is there a train? Buses would take ages. Or a National Express coach? A taxi would be expensive as well. And you can't fly between the 2. So I think train, coach, or a very nice friend with a lot of time on their hands is the only answer.
