It depends on what you want to use the laptop for and your budget. Dell can be good and are reasonably priced. I've heard good things about Toshiba as well. IBM are generally good as well as long as you don't mind the laptop looking like a brick.

One to avoid would be Sony Viao (parts are difficult to come by if it every needs repairing).

I've owned Gateway, Dell, HP most of last 10-12 yrs. A few mos. ago got my first Japanese laptop, a Fujitsu Lifebook Tablet, what a difference. It's was a couple hundred more, but it's around 1 1/2 ", very light, up to 4-5 hr battery life, control buttons when in tablet mode, and honestly it just looks cooler, have been asked about it by other people who see it about 5X more than all others combined.
However, if your looking for a desktop replacement /multimedia machine I've had good luck w/ my 17" HP,movies on it r amazing, though I've never had a big screen Japanese notebook. I'd bet u it's probably superior.

the most economical laptop is from Dell and they do have variety of offers everyday. If you want quality and looks then go for Viao or IBM. they are good ones as well. Dell is prefered by everyone since its cheap and powerful.

The best laptops are TOSHIBA and FUJITSU-SIEMENS.....How to tell?? ..they won many awards on international exhibitions and expos.Make sure its at least 60 GBs and it is INTEL CENTRINO processor......the lastest generation. To remind u..it was pentium 4..then intel celeron....and the latest and fastest now is : INTEL CENTRINO.Concerning the screen there are TFT and bright colour...The bright screens are sure the superior.GOOD LUCK.Make sure that ur laptoip is made in japan and not in china(look at the back)...not that chinese is bad...but u know japan is the best in laptops. :-)
