my chandras (or indian glass fish) are slowly turning opaque one by one and some seem to have bloody lips but no sign of damage. they eat well to start with but they seem to lose the use of the upper part of their tail fin eventually they seem exhausted and lose their swimming ability before dieing. does anyone have any idea what they are suffering from as I have lost several of them over a couple of weeks and any treatment that could help. The water quality is fine but perhaps not as hard as chandras prefer but they are in a community tank and it is as hard as it can be without damaging my other fish and I have been told that the chadras don't need the water to be hard they just prefer it

Some times these glass fish are dyed or injected with florescent dye this does have determental effect on them. Also have you treated for finrot as this has the same symptons.

Water hardness should not make enough of a difference to be killing the fish... what else is in the tank? They could be a weaker stock, or perhaps sick from some other cause. It could be that other fish in the tank are picking on them - if the upper part of their fins are being nipped, it seems like the other fish are attacking them. I'm not sure how hardy they normally are, but they could be weak from poor treatment, shipping, or any other number of things.

Are the ones you've had for more than a week doing fine?

I'd imagine that if most of them survive for more than a week, those fish won't die off. It could just be shock from moving to a new tank.

The musle mass of all glass fish are clear, and before they die, or if their sick they turn white. I would not wait for someone to give you a really good answer here. Go reaserch for the sake of your fish!!!! Rush to a pet store!!!! DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK THEM QUESTIONS!!! do water changes with adged or de-clorinated water, mabey a little stress coat will do them good. Feed them high quality fish food if they are still eating, do they will have extra energy to fight the sickness with!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!!
