You heater will stay as hot as it can get unless you regulate it with a thermostat. This device controls how hot your enviroment can get to and you adjust it for different animals. Check out the rating on the thermostat but most start at a rating of 100 wats maximum.

You mean and under tank heater? It depends on what reptile you have in there. Different reps need different heat. I suggest you go to walmart or your local pet store and buy and inexpensive thermometer. The kind that sticks to the glass of the tank. It costs around 3 dollars. Than monitor it untl you get the proper temp.

The kind of reptile you have will greatly alter the correct answer to your question. In any case, you will need a thermostat to manage the temperature of any heating device, as nearly all of them get to hot for most herps. For specific info on your pet, visit the forums at http://www.kingsnake.com. If you have a cornsnake I recommend http://www.cornsnakes.com.
