Try using one of these synonyms for showoff in conjunction with an insulting word: ostentatious, pretentious, narcissistic
Examples:
Ostentatious Pr.. k!
Pretentious Di.. k!
Using a more formal word ads strength to your insults because it shows versatility in your language. In this case it's perfect because it's a double hitter. You are showing off to the other person by using a larger vocabulary. It's kinda like calling the other person dumb with out saying it >:)

Maybe the bully is jealous of you or has a crush on you. Tell the bully you know that they feel the need to pick on you because they are just insecure in their abilities and if he/she would spend half his/her energy on their studies as they do on bullying you then they too could be happier and smarter.

Tell him that you feel bad for him because it's sad that he is so cocky when he has absolutely no reason to be. Tell him to give it a rest for a few days and maybe come back and run his mouth some when he can actually back it up.

Tell him to wait until everyone is watching before he starts more bullying. Make him self-conscious.

Just call him / her 'insecure'. :) Good english words hurt more than the normal abuses.
Bullies are bullies since they crave for attention. Make sure he understands that.
And moreover - ignore them.
