Its the culture. Americans are raised not to talk or address strangers ( people they don't know). People walking in New York Streets doesn't look at each other. They don't socialise in streets. But smile anyway because you are in your con try and they will feel welcomed and learn how to make friends in your culture. But don't make a huge effort to be nice because some are really arrogant and have a sense of superiority because they are also raised that way. Just be yourself and be proud of who you are too, and greet this people as you do with all others.

Ok, first of all i stay in China and have been to HK and noticed one thing that Chinese people try to treat Americans and Britishers...... lets say WHITES in a larger than life way. Y do u guys think they are cooler than you???
Come on this is reality...... i see that u guys will respect any white.... regardless of who he is (pauper - richest)....JUST COZ HE IS WHITE. Can u deny that?
You dont look for a friend from Africa or why say... even anyother part of the world with dark skinned people.
You look down on these people. I still am confused... is China Racist or just ignorant?
And being in HK come on..... these Brits and Americans should be approaching u. Dont u know that they still beleive that the rest of the world is behind them.
You are showing no self respect for yourself. This is not just you i would say that to every Chinese and China is the only place where people run behind Whites just for friendship. And this is purely based on skin colour. You copy everything they do... its no bad to copy.... but its unbeliveable in China.
This is not an attack on u or any other nationality, i have seen this and i have personally felt that Chinese people need to grow up and show some self respect.
And how many strangers would smile at you in reality.

Never had a problem going up to anyone from any nationality in HK or Singapore (I'm part filipino, chinese, british, american indian). But I suspect that when you want to start a conversation, you end up staring at them and that's rude from a western perspective. Don't think too hard about what you're supposed to say and just say it instead of trying too hard. They're people just like you...they eat, they crap...don't think they're better than you and you might end up making more friends that way.

That is because that is common US / Brit behavior. We don't walk around smiling. But smile and nod and you might get a smile back.
