Since averywhere in the world is always west of somewhere else!

It dates back to the cold war, where NATO was the West, and the Soviet Union was the East.

Incidentally, this is also where "blue on blue" came from, as NATO's main colour in diagrams/maps etc was blue, and the Soviets were red.

The West originally referred to Western Europe. It was extended to mean America when it was colonized by Britain and France.

This is just a convenient term from the spin doctors, a substitute for "us" and "them".

This term is nothing to do with geography. eg. Israel is usually represented in the "Eurovision Song Contest" and gets grants from the EU even though geographically it is in the "middle east" or sometimes even the "west".

Because on a standard flat map with the meridian (?sp) in the centre, they are on the left...ie West

because they are west of the ex-ussr, which is the east. comes from the cold war, i think

Good question! I got one for you: If car jacking is when you steal a car why is stealing a plane called hi-jacking? Why not plane jacking. And what do you call stealing a boat???
