I don't want to risk her saftey and didn't! She is nearly 2.. just a friend of mine's sister is expecting, Fi and her bf don't drive, walk everywhere and live near the hospital..it would be an expense they would not otherwise incur

i would suggest she maybe phone her maternity ward and check what their requirements are and explain their situation then it should be easily resolved. if not is there a friend she could maybe borrow a carseat from for the day just to get baby home?

Eh, is the world becoming obsessed with cars!!!

As the asker says not everyone has or needs a car, and what about when cars were more of a luxury item and more people walked or used public transport? Did new mums go home by hovercraft??!!!!!

When I had my little girl (four years ago) we were given similar advice, and yes, we did not have a car at the time. What we did do was use a proper pram (a buggy might not be suitable for a new born baby) and wrap baby up properly. Luckily we lived about 2 miles from the hospital and there was regular public transport. If we had known more about black cabs we would have ordered one - but again you need to be sure that your pram will fit in one.

The staff on our maternity ward were really helpful and accepted that we were making other arrangements. Everyone assumes that cars are going to be used and there are legal requirements to ensure that babies / children are safe in cars, so there will be reminder leaflets. A car seat is a very useful thing to have and is part of many pram travel systems. However, I am sure that staff on the ward would have been helpful if sensible alternatives were suggested - eg not in a car, but we are going to ....

The alternative would be *(()( ridiculous.

When I gave birth(2month ago) I asked about that, and they said that so long as the child is safely carried/pushed via buggy out from the hospital a carseat is not needed, the only reason a carseat is needed is if they are leaving in a car, although I did find out yesterday that you can carry a baby in your arms at the back seat of a car and thats not illegal it only is if its in the front seat, so to be honest I think the leaving hospital part is dependant on who the midwife in charge is, I think its only advised to leave with a carset rather then implemented. Hope that helped!

You should be fine with a pram - but a nurse will come down with you and make sure you're not putting the child in a car without a seat.

Failing that, it might be worth asking a taxi firm if they have any cars with baby seats available.

NB Children under 6 months should be put in a pram where they can lie flat rather than a buggy where they sit up.

Some hospitals have a car seat lending service. Your friend can ask on her next check up if this is a service the hospital provides. They cant legally stop you as they dont know how you are travelling home. For all they know the car seat can be down in the car. But if the baby is travelling in a car it is safer to have it in a car seat.

well when i had my son 6 years ago it was the same for me i was not allowed to take him home without a carseat but what really annoyes me was the midwife carried him downstairs to the car and strapped him in his seat which upset me because as a proud new mum i wanted to do that my self
the second time when i had my daughter it was the same again
but the third time when i had my daughter 18 months ago i finally got what i wanted i carried her out of the hospital and strapped her in her seat
because apperently the hospitals accept no liability anymore or something like that

i mean every hospital is different most hospitals now you have to take your own baby milk and bottles because the hospitals dont supply you with them anymore
tell your friend to ask her midwife or ring the maternity unit at the hospital she will be going to

If they live close and are not having someone pick them up after being released, they most likely don't need the seat. They should call the hospital and see what they say about it. Better to know before they get there than when they are already admitted and he has to find a way to the store to get a carseat.

I would say that if she is well enough to walk a short distance to her home, then all they need is a safe and secure pram. I think the condition of car-chairs is for people who leave by either private car or taxi.

However, I think your question is interesting, because I'm not sure if it is illegal for a passenger to hold a baby on their knee in a car. I know that all children below the height of 4.5' have to sit in a booster seat after early September.

I think your friends should be allowed to walk home and if Fi is not well enough to, then she could go in a taxi whilst her partner proudly walks his new son/daughter to their home.

I wish them all the best.

If you're not planning on driving your baby home, they won't require you to have a car seat. But I'm wondering how the mother is going to leave the hospital after giving birth. Is she going to walk home, because that'd really be a strain on her, I would think.

my son was early and we didn't have a car seat at the time. he had a bit of a hospital stay and we had a chance to get him one, we hadn't even had the baby shower yet.
in ny state if you can't afford a car seat you can go to your local sheriffs office and they'll give you a new one and install it in your car.
and as for the buggies, most infant seats will lock into it so you're tiny guy is nice & secure.
