The shortest day is in December, the winter solstice, which occurs about Dec. 21. That date is not, however, the date of either the earliest sunset or latest sunrise, which come about ten days earlier or later, respectively.

The longest day would depend on what hemisphere you live in here is New Zealand the shortest day is in June and the longest day in December, opposite to the Northern hemisphere.
But the lenght of the day will not make it extra hot or cold...
