top spin is hitting the ball with a an upward swing to put "top spin" on the ball. this enables you to hit harder and still keep the ball in bounds on the court. To do it you need to practice the upward swing and correct raquet placement that causes the ball to spin.

You hit over the top of the ball causing the ball to spin in the air, top over. If you get good at it you can hit the ball as hard as you what to because the spin will make it drop. Also if you hit the net it'll climb it and go over. You'll notice the ball just drop straight down almost after clearing the net, also when it hits the ground it doesn't really bounce very high because it'll take off low to the ground.

Once you start learning it try to hit over the top but to the left or right, the ball will curve it the air some but when it hits the ground it'll grab and go away from other player. Top spin and curve combined help a lot in serving also because it allows you to hit ball harder with odd things it does when it hits court.

Top spin is when you make the ball spin forward. The desired result is to make the ball sink faster, thus allowing you to hit the ball higher over the net without it sailing out of bounds long, so you won't need to cut it so close to the net. It will also make the ball bounce lower, making it more difficult for your opponent to return it.

It's difficult to describe how to apply it in words. I'd definitely try to get the help of an instructor or experienced player. But basically, you grip the racket so that the head faces just a tiny bit more downward (a western or semi-western grip) than when you hit the ball flat (without spin), and then brush upward on the ball as you hit it. You'll probably need to aim a bit higher than normal and swing a bit harder. Good luck!

Top Spin is the primary spin used in tennis. It is put on the ball to help keep it in and gain control of the ball. The ball starts higher over the net to give you net clearance then dives into the court sharply . It improves your overall consistency. It is used on every shot except the volleys and overhead smash.
The simplest way I can explain trying to apply top spin is to aim the top of your racquet at the bottom of the ball , then pull your racquet up quickly so every string on your frame touches the ball for a brief moment causing the ball to tumble end over end in a rotating motion.

When you hit the ball, you put the head of the racquet down and brush the ball, that makes the ball goes rolling,
