The original was Screamin Jay Hawkins, then CCR did it in the late 60's. Those are the only 2 versions I know. I can't even imagine Bette Midler doin that song. Remember the Levis commercial from 2 years ago that used the Jay Hawkins version? The mannequin kept following the dude that took his jeans? Creepy, but cool commercial.

It's okay- I'm not a huge Midler fan, but this is one of her songs that I find to be catchy-- isn't it actually an old song that Bette just did a cover of? I'd like to hear someone else sing it though, maybe a guy with a nice voice similar to Sinatra or Bing Crosby.

I haven't heard Bette's version, though I assume she does it straight...the Screamin' Jay Hawkins version was originally supposed to be done straight, but he and the band got sh*tfaced drunk before the session, and the result is a raunch-rock classic...my favorite version actually is by Creedence Clearwater Revival

i love the song no matter who sings it. the very first person to sing it was a blues guy named named "screamin' Jay Hawkins" I don't know what year, but his version is pretty coo'.
