green leaf vegetables require nitrogen, you can get it from chemical fertilizers high in nitrogen, or manure or urine (including your own)

Keep them well-watered, make sure they aren't crowded and give
them a little fertilizer, they like diluted fish emulsion. But you don't
have to wait that long, baby lettuce is great, so as you thin out the plants, use the baby's in your salad. Its amazing how much better
lettuce tastes when you grow it yourself. Plus, plant different
kinds, I try to find as many different varieties as I can so my salad
really has variety in texture, color and taste.

I always catch a Carp or other garbage fish chop them up and use for fertilizer.....grows huge tomatoes, lettuce and peppers!
Or you can use a vegetable plant food.
