A friend of mine thinks that George Bush does what he does in order to impress his father.
I don't know where I stand, as his father's reign was a bit before my time. My impression of him is not that he shares the same sentiments or practices as his son.
Anybody out there able to shed some light on this?
Was Bush senior as controversial as Bush junior?

I think your friend has a point but it's not to impress him. I liked Bush Sr he had some semblance of function and empathy I don't see in his son. Some speculate that Bush Jr has not dyslexia but undiagnosed ADHD which effects his ability to feel empathy and his ability to process complex ideas. He is most comfortable in a small arena and lives with a them or us mentality that he expresses in unscripted speeches. Added to this is his religious zeal and you've got a recipe for disaster. If your truly interested look for a book called Bush on the Couch by Justin A. Frank. His basic view is that Bush Jr has a strained relationship with his father and is upping him. He also has a neurological processing disorder that sends him on vacation 49% of his time in office, he needs to retreat often. This reality may be why he refuses to even consider the idea of retreat in this hyped war on terror he's declared against the whole world. He isn't able to process difficult concepts that may have many diverging elements, his father was. The filters he hears God through are clogged, so his vision is linear and short sighted. I won't overwhelm you with to much of this but your friend is not alone in the idea that Bush Jr is working out his childhood issues with the nation at his bequest. Simply put when you watch him see how little empathy he actually shows for victims of Katrina, victims of war or victims of truth. The man claims to see the first plane hit the twin towers and his response is "gee what a bad pilot" then goes in to read a story book to children. He can't make unscripted decisions, he's a terrible leader but a great puppet. He has advance information of a possible hurricane hitting Louisiana and doing serious damage. He goes on vacation and waits days to respond or comment on it not even bothering to watch the news or ask for updates. He talks about the war on terror then diverts funds from homeland security. He tells the military to stand the course and cuts medical funding to veterans and educational benefits to the service men. He talks about a terrorist threat then thinks entering into a Port deal with the UAE is a good idea. His father knew when to step back for the sake of "mission accomplished" and he did it despite criticism. The son won't step back because it's not about anything more then a personal agenda and if you doubt it look who's profited from this war. He's a stooge with issues who's being used by cooperate America, oil companies, Haliburtan and special interests to get rich at the expense of American credibility. They are feasting while children die, soldiers die and oil is more valuable then the constitution.

It's not as much impressing him as it's breaking free of the resentment he feels for being beholden to him for most his life. His daddy got him out of most the messes he created and now he's arrived and is trying to humiliate his daddy by doing the things some say his daddy couldn't or didn't do right. One was Saddam but in reality he's being played like a violin at a funeral. He's a lost little boy pretending to be his own man this is why he does stupid things like rub the German Chancellors shoulders at a open session of Government officials. He's saying "look daddy I got Saddam and you didn't I'm my own man now" and Haliburtan and Exon are smiling and sending him thank you cards.

A reporter asked him if he'd asked his father what to do about Iraq and he said "I take my council from a higher father". In other words no he's got new daddies now and were all gonna pay for it.

He was president during the 1st gulf war. that was a different situation. Iraq had invaded Kuwait claiming the land was historically part of Iraq. Kuwait requested help from the UN to remove the Iraqi forces. So it was done.
The two biggest criticisms at the time were that many felt saddam should have been removed from power. saddam went on to punish the shiites and he gassed the kurds.
His other famous mistake was his campaign quote, "read my lips. no new taxes". He then had to raise taxes and the media roasted him.

To be honest I'm not sure that he is fully aware of what he's doing. I believe that other people make the decisions for him. I'm don't really know why Tony Blair follows him around like a lap dog. Mr Blair is a well educated intelligent man, while Mr Bush on the other hand is not intelligent, not very well educated and has only got where he is today because he happened to be related to people in high places.

Many people feel that the real reason "W" invaded Iraq was as a sort of payback to Hussein for having wanted to see his father dead.

And no, Bush Sr. was not half as controversial.

Although there was that "read my lips" incident and the raising of taxes but that still does not compare to what his son has done in office.

George Walker Bush has lived off his daddys back since he was born. He has never even known how to run a company, let alone a country. Every company that he ever got involved in went bust and now he's the US president. You couldn't make it up could you?

Oh yeah old georgie senior was no angel. He was just a hell of a lot "quieter" about his exploits. He was the director of the CIA for years before running with Reagan as VP, and supplied anti-castro cubans with arms for their militia during the bay of pigs. He is also suspected to have some connections with the kennedy assasination, cover-up and intimidation of Hoover's FBI.
Fun family huh?
