No, you can do 500 sit ups and use the incorrect form and technique and hardly work your abs at all.
Instead, try doing them correctly and aim for 30-60 for each ab part. It should consist of at least 3 different exercise movements. So we're talking a minimum of 90 crunches/situps.
Also, nowadays most people know that sit ups are not working the abs as well as good crunches. They will hurt your back too if you move wrong. They only work well if you know exactly how to do them correctly. Try getting a club membership or look online for correct techniques to work the abs.

To accomplish what goal? It is more important to count the number of times you go to the buffet table. Watch what you eat, drink plenty of water, do stretching exercises like Pilates, and go for a walk everyday for about an hour. 500 sit ups is too stressful on your back and neck. Everything in balance and moderation, even exercise. And instead of "sit ups" crunches are a better option, and you have to work the entire body, not just "spots".

Not true..... 100 really good ones are sufficient. The 400 your gonna do after that become ineffective. Instead save the time you'd spend on doing those 400 other sit ups by doing some other abdominal exercises or any kind of different exercise.
