Rani Mukerji (once transliterated Rani Mukherjee) born March 21, 1978), is a popular Indian actress in Bollywood movies.
Family background

She comes from a film-clan family of Bengali origin: Her father, Ram Mukherjee is a retired director. Her mother Krishna used to be a playback singer, while her brother Raja Mukherjee is a film producer. Bollywood actress Kajol is her second cousin. (See Mukherjee-Samarth family)
Career

She began her film career with the Bengali film Biyar Phool. However, she made her Hindi debut in Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1996). The film did not do well at the box-office. Her next two releases Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) were successful. For the latter she received her first Filmfare Award as Best Supporting Actress (1998).

She appeared in a fair number of movies after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, but none of them were enormous successes. Her career seemed to be stalled, until she starred in the 2001 film Saathiya, directed by Shaad Ali. The film was critically and commercially successful.

In 2004, Mukerji starred in Hum Tum, Yuva and Veer-Zaara. Her performance in Hum Tum won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. She also won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Yuva. Veer-Zaara was the biggest hit of 2004 and was favourably received at the Berlin Film Festival.

In 2005 she starred in the films Black, Bunty Aur Babli, Paheli and The Rising. Bunty Aur Babli was a major success and her performances in the other three films were appreciated, especially in Black, which made her win all the major awards of the year.

Her next two releases will be Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Baabul.

Mukerji is also an active stage performer. She starred in the successful Temptations 2004 concert with Shahrukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and Priyanka Chopra.

I think she's great! She's one of my favorite bollywood actresses. She has great chemistry with whoever she is working with and I think she's very versatile. I hope she stays around for a long time.
