electric starters are easier. I don't think harley offers a kicker as an option but you can get an aftermarket kicker, for an evo anyway. You'll need to change the ignition system also if you want to start the bike with it. The harley and most ignitions require the engine to turn 2 complete revolutions before it fires, to cut down on the engine kicking back. There are 2 aftermarket ignitions that will fire on first available cylinder which allows the kick starter to work.
For those of you that think you just kick to start, a street bike still needs a key to start,( unless you've bypassed the key switch)they are not like dirt bikes with no ignition switch. So security wise there is no difference.

Large displacement bikes, and especially overweight ones like a Harley, are a pain in the *** to kickstart and can even be dangerous in a backfire. Unless the bike is quite refined (like a BMW), it's really better to have the quick engine-turnover of an electric starter. Of course, if youre battery dies, you're screwed but that's what AAA service is for.

I gotta go with the "Fiddler"... I ride and he's right.

BUT to actually "see" a guy do a Classic Kick Start on a Hog in the 50's and early 60's... to any kid back then it was a mystical experience to behold !

Electric starters haven't bred any legendary images about any Weekend Warrior's thumb lately!

Kick back is a killer. My much smaller motorcycle would occasionally kick back, and I have a nice scar on my calf from getting hit once. A Harley would probably kick back a lot harder!

It's because of all the weekend warriors..they need comfort over originality...you can still spesial order them or het them on older bikes...but on the new ones is gonna cost you a pretty penny.

Reliable starters are being made and kick starters just add weight.
