From my personal experience, I usually take notice when she displays something interesting, e.g. reading a book I like, playing a sport I also play or enjoy watching, saying something that makes me laugh, etc. These things mean that we at least have a little in common, which will provide a good starting point. How she looks is less important; we'll all be old and nasty soon, so why bother basing something on that. Looks are still a factor, but not the biggest one, or even the fifth biggest.
As for GETTING him to notice, don't bother faking something that me might be interested in. It's just not worth it in the long run. You are who you are, and either he'll like it, or he's not worth your time. If you guys do have something in common, though, I don't believe there's anything wrong with starting a conversation, eh? In other words, you want him to notice you? Go introduce yourself. Gender roles are so 20th century.
