This is absolutely not true. Either a son or a daughter is a GIFT from God. If you are fortunate enough to have a son or a daughter you are truly a blessed person and should do everything you can for them. God gives us children to raise up in the right direction but we do not own them. I think he is only letting us share in their lives for a little while. So both should be seen and viewed as a blessing!

Being a girl myself, I strongly disagree with this. But to be honest, some people in my culture still believe that only a son can inherited family line. For example, a son inherited the family name. While a daughter cannot inherited her family name because her son/daughter will bear her husband family name.

A father will not consider his daughter as member of his family. So if someone ask him how many children he have, he will just count how many son he have excluding his daughter.

Back, back, way back, in the times when the myths were being inscibed onto paper or parchment men were doing the inscibing. Emphasizing lack of sons as a plot device and the lesser worth of daughters may or may not have been part of the original orally passed down story. Just as any open minded scholar of the Bible will tell you that many generations passed before it was decided what parts of the bible to write down, so too were myths of Hera and Zeus and others passed down through many minds before written down. Also many societies of the past had the treasure and wealth of the family and clan kept and passed down by the men. Stories and histories are almost allways seen through tinted perceptions.

Both the girl as well as boy should be considered equal ,given equal share in properties ,equal respect and love, both are the creations of GOD and none has the right to abort a girl child because she is girl.
As rightly said by preached by Prophet Mohammed(P.B.U.H.), who himself had only four daughters and loved them a lot. Also, he brought a revolution in the ARAB when the women were given the most respected place in the society and looking at them with wrong intentions was and is considered a great sin.

Other than the son keeping the family name alive there is also the fact that many women died in childbirth not long ago. A son had more of a chance to stay alive and keep reproducing than a daughter.

sons carry the family name and the family fortune
while daughters after their marriage have to adapt their husbands name.... though it is an option but thanx to teh adrenaline rush they mostly do. daughters are given least share in family fortunes to make sure the family property stays within the family after their marriage

sons are pretty much of a fixed deposit
daughters... well money spent on them is money lost.

hate to write all this
but i am a woman
and belong to southeast asia
so thats how things are.....

The term wouldn't be "better," but in ancient societies (and some modern ones) only men could inherit and own property.
