In my Opinion AVG is much better.
This is what I use and recommend to all the people whose machines I repair.
I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)
The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.
These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.
The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)
for further information on computer safety.

AVG is much better, I have been using it for years. I have installed it on many client machines as a way to remove viruses from an already infected PC. Why pay for McAfee when you can use AVG for free (as long as you are using this for personal use and not for a business)? As a matter of fact, I have had to uninstall McAfee and install AVG on many machines just because McAfee could not remove some viruses!
You can find AVG and a list of other completely free anti-virus programs here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_anti_virus.html
If you are looking for free anti-spyware softare go to this page - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_spyware.html
I hope this helps

AVG Anti Virus is free and will get automatic updates, whereas you have to pay for McAff. The only draw back with AVG is that
it may not be clean all virus. If you want a paid anti virus, Quick Heal is one of the best and is cheaper as compared to Mcafee and Norton.

I prefer Kaspersky too...I did use AVG for a while...it's free and it's pretty good...does what it's supposed to and doesn't eat a lot of resources...I've never liked McAfee personally...the one I'm curious about is the new free one from AOL based on Kaspersky...if that's as good as it sounds, that might well be my pick

AVG is a great anti-virus software. It updates daily, and it's free. I use AVG, and I love it. It is not a bad product just because it is free. In fact, for businesses and such, it is not free. It is free to homes with computers because they want to provide good virus protection to people who can't or won't pay for it. In fact, they are supported partly by donations that are provided by people who are so satisfied with the product that they give money to the company.

AVG and Avast! both PWN every other antivirus program. I prefer avast!, but they were both made by alwil, i think. According to my grandfather, who avast!, then AVG, said that AVG is just like avast!, but it doesnt go WOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOOOO when a virus pops up (in other words, doesn't give people heart attacks!)
Anyway, screw Norton, screw McAffe, and grab avast! or AVG.
