While growing up, in my elementary school, they voted me the quietest girl in all of 2nd grade. I was so shy I had only 1 friend for each school I went to. In high school, I was like you, I fought my way out of my shell because I did not want to be shy anymore. It took awhile. You don't just wake up one morning and become miss popular. I learned to communicate with others. That is the first step. I did it with people I was comfortable with at first. I learned to engage in two way conversations (meaning how to hold a conversation, bring up new topics, and challenge someone on their opinions, etc). This took awhile. When I was comfortable enough, I broaden my social circle one person at a time. I was in the Army and HAD to brief a hundred soldiers on how to do their DNA packet. I never thought I could stand in a stage and talk to people. All these experiences have given me more confidence over time. Now, people can't shut me up.
Remember that communication is the key towards adapting to society. Being shy also stems from anxiety from low self esteem or confidence. To overcome that anxiety is to face your fears and to do it. It may take conscious effort at first but overtime it will become 2nd nature. Start out small and then expand your group of friends and associates. Yes, I agree with others, joining a club and being active within the community will help bring forth opportunities you do not have sitting at home in front of the tv. Good luck!

With a name like HotChick, it's hard to believe you are shy. But, don't worry, everyone is a little shy. Some people are real shy. Stand in front of a mirror and just start talking. Say whatever you feel. Just don't get nasty. That crosses the line from being unshy to being, well, nasty. Keep working at it. You'll come around.

You should join an activity that meets on a regular bases,
and through the meetings you can make friends, and eventually you'll be able to open up to people.
Also these activities give you something to talk about- that you know you have in common.

dont be shy on the net - say what you want - be who you are
it will slowly seep into your everyday life once you discover that people dont dislike the `real` you

Just speak your mind and don't be afraid of what others think.
Most people are shy because they're afraid that others will judge them. Just be yourself and just say what you feel.
