Never memorize.
There are thousands of chemical equations for A levels and if you memorise all of them without knowing the mechanisms behind them, it is not going to work.
Instead, tell him to understand how reactions takes place. It is the concepts and the reasons behind different types of reactions that are important. Once you master them, you would be able to apply them easily in the exams.

If you are talking about the perodic table. Post a copy of it on the wall adjacent from the comode. While he is there he will memorize a few elements and their characteristics everyday. So will the entire family, who will now be able to test him on the material every day.

Make flash cards, do not buy them. randomly test him everyday.
Have him test himself.
Take him to museums. Go to about.com.

Have him keep a journal on each element, he should make 5-10 entries a day. Have him read a biography of Mendeleiv the inventor of the chart.

Buy him a jr. chemistry set, it is fun and he will learn.

Go to pbs.org

Email me if you need more specific advice. I hope this helps.

There are plenty of memory aids and techniques. I make the activity series into a song. Relationship triangle, funny abbreviations, comical sentences, etc. Use your imagination.

For example,
1 horsepower is equivalent to 746 watts
(the number is easily remembered as "Seldom Fall Sick", 746)

sorry, memorizing does not help. It is better to understand each concept and what is really going on. Your son will have a better ability to answer questions then on quizzes and tests.
