In principle, a space station could be placed everywhere except for very close to a star or black hole.

If you mean a naturally habitable planet, Earth is the only one in our own solar system, although some scientists argue that Mars could artificially be changed to be hospitable to humans.

But there could be many possibilities in other solar systems in our galaxy. You would have to look for stars of a size similar to our sun:
- too small stars do not produce enough short-wavelength light to let photosynthesis (green plants) take place
- too big starts burn too quickly to allow life to evolve. Also, they produce too much UV light so you would get skin cancer.

Also, you would have to look at stars in approximately the same orbit of the galaxy center as that of our sun:
- solar systems too near to the center are exposed to too much cosmic radiation
- solar systems too far from the center to not have enough heavy elements like oxygen because there have been too few super-nova's in the neighborhood.

But even if you found a planet very similar to our Earth, you might not be able to find wild plants and animals that you could eat. For example, if the organic molecules on that planet where isomers of those on Earth, you would not be able to digest the natural food on the planet. In that case you wold have to bring your own crops and farm animals.

How far? Is it possible that man can find shelter outside of Earth? Yes it is very possible however governments need to prioritize as this is a project that would be too expensive short of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. The cost of the Iraq war alone could of put a functioning moon base in place. Here are some interesting websites.
