I have just moved into a rather old house and after the first time I steam cleaned the carpets, and boy did they need it, the horrible smell of dog pee filled my whole house. The more I steam clean, the worse it gets. I've tried chemicals, deodorizer, carpet fresh, ect...and it just gets worse and worse. At this point I can hardly sleep, I've lost my taste for food, and I am constantly burning incense. Anybody have a solution besides tearing up the carpets? The landlord says that is not an option. Help please.

Instead of carpet shampoo use white vinegar. It neutralizes the ph of the urine. The smell of vinegar is in the home for only a little while - after an hour or so it will smell clean and fresh.

The only way to truly get rid of pet urine smell is to use an enzymatic neutralizer. You can buy this at a vet clinic or pet supply store.
If you don't know specific spots where the dog peed, you might need a lot of the enzyme and put it on all the carpets.

If the smell is that bad, tearing up the carpet and padding won't do any good. You would probably end up having to take out the subfloor as well.

Try the vinegar, but make sure that you ventilate well.

The padding under the carpet are probably saturated and filthy.

The only solution is to replace the carpet and padding. Your landlord is a cheap ***hole.

Walmarts have been selling the pet urine remover kits for some time now they are about $15 I think. they have some kind of Enzyme spay to neutralize and a blacklight to find the source.
Pet urine glows under blacklight.

good luck.
