Ok... to really understand wildcard masks, you need some knowledge of ACLs. (Just google it and you'll find a TON if information). A wildcard mask is a way of expressing the particular octets of an IP address that matter (what you care about for whatever particular reason) while completely ignoring the ones you don't. I know its vague but maybe with this information you will be able to help yourself.

Like...
Class C: Last octet will hold your wildcard mask.
Class B: Last two octets will hold your wildcard mask.
Class A: Last three octets will hold your wildcard mask.

Wildcard masking is nothing but conversion of host bits to 1 and and network bits to zero.

this is just opposite of Subnet mask

For example

IP address : 172.16.20.10 subnet mask is 255.255.0.0

For this IP Address, wild card mask is 0.0.255.255

that is... 172.16.20.10 is Class B IP Address, that means in this Class B Range - First 2 octets are called network bits and other 2 octets are called Host bits..

Now we convert all the host bits to 1, so Wild card mask for this IP is 0.0.255.255
