People who work directly with abused victims tend to be social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, or possibly case managers. They all need degrees, with case managers being the job requiring possibly only a Bachelor's degree. Volunteering is probably the best way to be of assistance in the environments you're looking for unless you want to go to the six-plus years of school or more.

There is one thing, though: If you wanted to do something like put together a group who would, say, buy clothing or even toys for children who have been abused your group could then contact agencies to find out how to go about distributing such items.

Well, you can always look on the web and find some local centers to see if you can volunteer. You don't need formal training yet for that, since you won't be working directly with the clients. Good luck.

I would do both. Join big brothers and Big sisters program while you are getting your formal training. It will help look good on a resume when done with schooling and it can be a rewarding experience.

Check with your clergy...There are many opportunities within the church to serve others at every level.
